South Africa

September – October 2018

Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve

Introduction

I travelled to South Africa back in 2018, as part of a volunteer abroad trip in partnership with my undergraduate degree at the University of Essex. Colchester Zoo in Essex is partnered with Umphafa – a game reserve in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. You can find more information about the Action for the Wild partnership here, and on the reserve’s website here.

I signed up for a two-week volunteer internship, where I lived on the private reserve and took part in conservation work and activities. I have a full post on this which can be found in the quick links tabs above or below.

As I was flying all the way to South Africa – a place I had never been to before – I added a week on to the beginning of my trip to explore Cape Town. This was my first solo trip abroad. A detailed guide and more information on my trip to Cape Town can also be found in the Quick Link tabs.

Overall I absolutely loved South Africa – it is still to this day one of my favourite places in the world. The scenery is amazing, and of course topped off by the amazing wildlife. One of my first encounters on the very first day was seeing humpback whales out in the ocean – you could see them spirt up water followed by the flick of their tail from the beach. Amazing!
